Many names for women’s veiling may be found in early Sanskrit literature, including Avagunthana (oguntheti/oguthika), Uttariya (shoulder veil), Mukha-data (facial veil), and Sirovas-tra (head scarf).  “Ladies may be seen without any blame (for the parties concerned) in religious sessions, in marriage festivities, during a calamity, and in a wilderness” is how Bhsa’s play Pratimntaka depicts the Avagunthana veil.  Similarly, the sentiment is articulated in later Sanskrit literature in a more general way. According to data, the author of Mcchakatika, ladies did not wear the Avagaunthaha daily or at all times. When out in public, a married woman was supposed to wear a veil, according to him.
